Film Opening Concept
Assignment Description
For this assignment, we had to plan and develop the concept for our 2-minute film opening before writing the screenplay. This included deciding the genre, target audience, characters, setting, and structure of the opening. The goal was to create a strong and suspenseful introduction that would hook the audience and raise questions about the story. I worked in a group with Lujaina Said and Ella Netivi, and my main contributions were helping develop the core idea, helping create Pedro’s character and foreshadowing details, and helping plan the suspenseful structure and ending.
CONCEPT
Genre: Slasher Horror
Target audience: 15–18
Core Idea:
A simple game of hide and seek turns into a nightmare when a teenager goes missing, forcing her friends to hunt down a killer who may be one of them.
Tone:
Suspenseful, intense, and eerie.
My contribution:
I helped develop the core idea and tone. I suggested making the killer someone within the friend group so it would create more tension, mystery, and make the audience question every character.
THE OPENING’S PURPOSE
The information that the opening communicates is why the group of teenagers start looking for this killer. The opening shows two characters walking outside, away from a family party happening inside the house. They are walking down the neighborhood and talking. The characters decide to play hide and seek, and the countdown starts at 10. When the seeker gets to 1, they hear a scream. It fades to black and then shows a group of teenagers looking for the person who screamed. They have flashlights and are walking down the neighborhood when they see blood. It fades to black again and shows the title cards.
The questions raised for the audience are: Who did it? Where is the character? Is she dead? Why is there blood?
The opening hooks the viewers because it takes a normal and innocent childhood game and turns it into something terrifying. The scream shocks the audience and creates suspense. It also creates mystery because the audience does not know what happened or who did it.
My contribution:
I helped come up with the scream transition and the idea of revealing the blood at the end to create a cliffhanger.
CHARACTER CREATIONS
Character 1: Harmony
Age: 18
Role in the story: The seeker who heard the scream
One defining trait: Very dedicated to finding her missing friend
How the audience understands without dialogue: She is shown counting and then reacting in fear after hearing the scream.
Character 2: Amaya
Age: 17
Role in the story: Helping search for her friend
One defining trait: Nervous and anxious
How the audience understands without dialogue: Her tight grip on the flashlight shows fear and worry.
Character 3: Pedro
Age: 19
Role in the story: The killer pretending to be innocent
One defining trait: Calm and suspicious
How the audience understands without dialogue: His calm attitude and suspicious behavior suggest he may be hiding something, and the blood symbol foreshadows his involvement.
My contribution:
I mainly helped create Pedro’s character, including his suspicious personality, his calm reaction, and the foreshadowing details that hint he could be the killer.
Character 4: Selena
Age: 16
Role in the story: The missing victim
One defining trait: Playful and adventurous
How the audience understands without dialogue: Her playful movements and laughter show her personality.
SETTING & MISE-EN-SCENE
We are filming on a dark suburban street at night. The only light sources are flashlights and light from a nearby house party.
The characters wear normal teenage clothing like jackets.
Important props include flashlights, a phone, and fake blood.
The darkness creates suspense and fear. The blood on the ground shows that something terrible happened and becomes the main focus.
My contribution:
I helped suggest using very limited lighting and focusing on the blood as the main visual clue to increase suspense.
