The Art of the Title

Assignment overview

For this project, I looked at how the very first few minutes of a movie can set the mood for the whole story. I analyzed the opening scenes of The Conjuring and Hereditary to see how they use things like lighting, sound, and camera movement to make the audience feel uneasy. Instead of just jumping into the action, these films use their title sequences to build suspense and hint at the scary themes to come. This assignment helped me understand that horror isn't just about "jump scares" it’s also about how the visuals and sounds work together to create a creepy atmosphere before the main characters even say a word.

Film opening analysis #1

In the movie, "The Conjuring," the opening scene establishes a dark and eerie

atmosphere through simple graphics, a black and white color scheme, and slow-paced

action. Instead of intimidating the audience, the scene relies on suspense. This is quite

effective, as the film itself is about psychological horror and thus must establish a

suspenseful experience for the audience.

The ideas for a supernatural horror genre are presented through darkness, religious icons,

and a glimpse of history. The introduction talks about real paranormal investigators, Ed

and Lorraine Warren, which provides a sense of realism and a glimpse of faith, evil, and the

unknown. The title sequence poses huge questions related to the nature of the danger and

its origins. Visually, the color palette centers on dark blues, blacks, and brown,

representing fear, stealth, and ethical ambiguity. The font style is simple and serif,

appearing on-screen as if etched by hand, reflecting the serious and earthy feel of the film.

The composition employs negative space, leaving the screen empty and exposed. The

pace of this movement is gentle, with slow camera movements and transitions. The editing

of this scene is also very slow, which allows for tension to build. Such a pace can be

appropriate for horror movies, which makes viewers anticipate instead of jumping. The use

of sound designs is very important. The low drones and ambient sounds help create a

sense of dread, which synchronizes with what you are seeing on screen. Without the use of

sound design, it could lessen the effect of the opening scene because a lot of fear comes

from sounds. The audience is adult and mature teenagers who enjoy atmospheric and

supernatural horror. There is the theme of faith and fear of the unknown being subjected to

traditional values. There is an atmosphere of the audience being tentative and

apprehensive in the beginning.

In conclusion, the opening sequence establishes a good pace for a horror movie. The title

sequence assists the storyline by creating a mood or theme as opposed to just being a

decorative aspect of the film. With one sentence, the opening sequence introduces a

frightening exploration of evil.

Film opening analysis #2

When Hereditary begins, you feel a certain level of discomfort from the very start because

of the slow and deliberate pace. The scene is eerie and discomforting, and you feel

apprehensive and frightened, though you’re not exactly frightened to death. This is

effective because it remains in the realm of horror, though it’s not frightening.

The movie has some undertones of psychological and supernatural horror in it by showing

isolation, home environments, and eerie stillness. The title sequence has some

undertones of family trauma and inheritance without giving away the storyline. This is

because it creates some suspense by slowly transitioning from the dollhouse to the real

world. The palette is comprised of brown and gray hues and lots of darkness, conveying

deterioration and intense emotions. There is a sense of control and repression of emotions

in the use of clean and minimalist type. The framing is accurate and symmetrical,

conveying control and the sense of the inevitable. There is a deliberate pace and careful

movement, and there are smooth transitions between reality and what's false. There's little

editing, and this allows shots to linger and discomfort to build. Such a pace matches the

film's psychological horror, which prevents viewers from experiencing relief. The sound is

quiet. The sound relies on silence and some background noise rather than music. The

quietness makes the tension greater and helps the viewer notice what they see. The

opening scene would not be as frightening if the sound were louder and more active. It is

directed at adults who are fond of horror movies that are slow-paced and psychologically

engaging. The subject matter of the film, which includes family, grief, and fate, suggests

some underlying psychological concepts. The beginning of the film makes the audience

feel uncomfortable and challenges them to think and feel along with the movie. On the

whole, the opening establishes an emotionally intense and mentally complex movie. The

title opening helps the story by providing significance through subtle visuals and minimal

audio. On the whole, the opening establishes an ominous glimpse into the inherited

trauma and the control by the supernatural.

Comparing and Contrasting Film

The Conjuring and Hereditary use slow motion footage, dark colors, and minimal text to

create a scary scene that derives from the atmosphere rather than from pivotal scenes.

However, The Conjuring uses traditional horror concepts and threats, whereas Hereditary

explores the idea of using mental disturbances and internal struggles. The Conjuring

provides a comfortable experience by employing traditional horror concepts, whereas

‘Hereditary’ disturbs the audience by overturning their notion of familiarity. All these

examples reveal that style can influence audience anticipation and their attitude towards

it.
