Film Opening Concept

Image
Assignment Description  For this assignment, we had to plan and develop the concept for our 2-minute film opening before writing the screenplay. This included deciding the genre, target audience, characters, setting, and structure of the opening. The goal was to create a strong and suspenseful introduction that would hook the audience and raise questions about the story. I worked in a group with Lujaina Said and Ella Netivi, and my main contributions were helping develop the core idea, helping create Pedro’s character and foreshadowing details, and helping plan the suspenseful structure and ending.  CONCEPT Genre: Slasher Horror Target audience: 15–18 Core Idea: A simple game of hide and seek turns into a nightmare when a teenager goes missing, forcing her friends to hunt down a killer who may be one of them. Tone: Suspenseful, intense, and eerie. My contribution: I helped develop the core idea and tone. I suggested making the killer someone within the friend group so it would...

Film Opening Screenplay

Blog Post #16: Film Opening Screenplay Published Date: January 22, 2026 Assignment Description  For this part of the assignment, we had to write and upload our final screenplay for our 2-minute film opening. This meant taking our original concept and turning it into a real script with dialogue, character actions, and camera directions. We also had to explain the media language choices we used and reflect on the changes we made. I worked with Lujaina Said and Ella Netivi. My main contributions were helping write parts of the screenplay, especially Pedro’s character, adding his phone texting scene, and helping revise his behavior at the end to make him more suspicious and build suspense. Moodboard

Image
For this assignment, I created a mood board to visually represent the tone, genre, and target audience for my horror film Where the Road Ends. The goal was to use imagery, color, and design to communicate the film’s atmosphere while connecting it to the audience research from my survey. Target Audience The mood board is designed for a 15–18 year old audience , which made up the majority of my survey responses. I chose visuals that feel intense and unsettling without being overly graphic, appealing to teens who enjoy suspense and psychological fear. Viewing Habits & Motivation Since most viewers watch horror occasionally or rarely , I wanted the mood board to suggest a memorable experience rather than nonstop action. Dark imagery and shadowed figures reflect the audience’s main reasons for watching: jump scares and dark, complex stories . Genre & Sub-Genres The mood board emphasizes psychological and supernatural horror , which ranked highest in the survey. Instead...

Target Audience

Image
For this assignment, I conducted primary market research to better understand the preferences and behaviors of horror film audiences. The goal was to gather data on why people watch horror, what specific sub-genres they prefer, and how they discover new content. This information is crucial for identifying a specific target audience and tailoring a film's marketing and narrative style to meet their expectations. To get this data, I put together a 10-question survey on Google Forms. I wanted to make sure I covered all the bases, so I split the questions into three main sections, who the viewers are, how they actually watch movies, and what they like seeing on screen like their favorite tropes, pacing, and those all-important endings. Strategy: I focused on creating questions that offered clear distinctions between sub-genres to see where the strongest interest lay. Distribution: I distributed the survey through social media links and passed out QR code links that take you to the...

The Art of the Title

Image
Assignment overview  For this project, I looked at how the very first few minutes of a movie can set the mood for the whole story. I analyzed the opening scenes of The Conjuring and Hereditary to see how they use things like lighting, sound, and camera movement to make the audience feel uneasy. Instead of just jumping into the action, these films use their title sequences to build suspense and hint at the scary themes to come. This assignment helped me understand that horror isn't just about "jump scares" it’s also about how the visuals and sounds work together to create a creepy atmosphere before the main characters even say a word. Film opening analysis #1 In the movie, "The Conjuring," the opening scene establishes a dark and eerie atmosphere through simple graphics, a black and white color scheme, and slow-paced action. Instead of intimidating the audience, the scene relies on suspense. This is quite effective, as the film itself is about psychological hor...
