Sound Art Project

The main objective of our Sound Art Project involved developing a soundscape lasting between 45 and 90 seconds centered on a particular scene using a mix of pre-recorded downloaded sound effects, alongside bespoke Foley sounds we created. Additionally we needed to make a distinct video capturing the making of our Foley sounds. Offer a comprehensive written account of our methods and final editing decisions. We selected the Café in the Morning " intending to portray the dual sensation of arriving at a cozy, bustling café, from a somewhat chaotic street and then entering inside. Our storyboard included an opening segment with vehicles, a rooster and footsteps followed by a prolonged indoor segment  characterized by the murmur of the crowd, soft background tunes and detailed sounds of making drinks.

The sound effects we downloaded and used included the Doorbell, Café Crowd Ambience and Background Music from Pixabay along with Cars Beeping from Free Sound Effects Site. These served as the base audio elements, for our outdoor settings. The Foley effects we produced consisted of Footsteps captured on a surface to imitate an approaching movement; a Rooster Crowing imitation, which added a comedic touch while setting a remote dawn atmosphere; the noise of a Pouring Drink, recorded by closely miking water flowing into a glass; and Cup Movement, generated by tapping and dragging a ceramic cup across a wooden table to enhance the indoor setting. The production required attempts to refine the rhythm of the footsteps and the crispness of the pouring producing deep tangible sounds that enhanced the listeners immersion.

The editing phase was essential to crafting an experience concentrating mainly on a clean energetic transition to separate the outside from the inside. The first 20 seconds combined the sounds of Cars Beeping and Rooster Crowing, atop the rising volume of Footsteps. The crucial change was indicated by the Doorbell sound, which instantly initiated a cross-fade: the outside noises (cars, rooster, footsteps) were either muted or swiftly diminished while the indoor sounds (Café Crowd Ambience and Background Music) were promptly increased. This abrupt alteration, in frequency and dynamic range effectively recreated the experience of passing through a door. Within we deliberately positioned the Pouring Drink and Cup Movement Foley sounds prominently in the mix. This choice of sound order and layering was designed to put the listener's perspective right at the counter or table, giving them a personal, active role in the quiet, focused moments of the bustling café.
